We all wonder from time to time, “How can I be a better father, mother, brother, sister, or family member?” As we try to become that better version of ourselves, we often stumble. We may fail, feel
discouraged, and sometimes slip back into old habits. But instead of taking the easy option and returning to who we used to be, perhaps we should return to our roots—remembering where we came from and who we truly are. There is so much we can learn about who we are meant to become when we reconnect with our history and culture.
This is exactly what the Native American Fatherhood and Families Association (NAFFA) has been accomplishing for the past 24 years. NAFFA’s approach is:

“...based on a culturally rich model that inspires and self-motivates through natural techniques.
[They] help parents devote their best efforts in teaching and raising their children to develop the potential and attributes needed for success in life.
[Their] method is to uplift, encourage, assist, and teach. Filling life with hope, gratitude, and understanding has a powerful effect in changing attitudes and behavior. There is no better way.”
NAFFA has seen this approach make an impact as their programs have been shared across the United States and Canada. They currently offer 6 trainings and 2 modalities available for individuals to be trained or participate in:
Fatherhood Is Sacred® / Motherhood Is Sacred®
Linking Generations by Strengthening Relationships®
Addressing Family Violence & Abuse©
Suicide Prevention©
Transforming Tomorrow’s Youth Program
Wellness Modality Training©
Re-Entry
Recovery
Through their family-focused and culturally grounded foundation, these programs are relatable and impactful. When asked if she had seen an example of the program changing someone’s life, Cheryl Honnie, NAFFA’s Training Director, shared her own story. She attended a Fatherhood Is Sacred® / Motherhood Is Sacred® class offered through her son’s school. Reflecting on the 12-week experience, she said, “As I sat through the sessions, I really went through a lot of self-reflection. I started to see and understand my role as a mom, to be a really sacred one, and how I needed to change.”
She continued, “That was what really helped me change in that moment. It was probably the ‘aha’ turning point of my life.”

While sharing her story Cheryl shares how to she realized she was not the version of herself she wanted to be and realizing she had children who were now looking to her she states “I want my kids to have somebody that knows that she loves them and that I will do whatever I can to be the best mother for them.” Through this program she was able to change and continues to change into that better wife and mother she wanted to be.
Today, Cheryl shares her story with those considering becoming facilitators, reminding them that real change begins within. NAFFA’s programs focus on healing oneself and shifting from a victim mentality to a victorious mentality—empowering individuals to understand their self- worth.
For those wanting to begin their journey of growth, starting with the Fatherhood Is Sacred® / Motherhood Is Sacred® training is recommended as a foundation that prepares participants for the other trainings.
For those who may not wish to become facilitators but still want to attend classes, NAFFA’s training team can help connect individuals with a class in their area.
Becoming a better version of ourselves is possible. It begins as we remember who we are, honor where we came from.
